The formation of Tianjin has spanned a long period of time in the history of China. The name “Tianjin”, first emerged during the early period of Emperor Yongle of China's Ming Dynasty. It means “A ferry crossing where the Son of Heaven has passed”.
In the second year of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1404), Tianjin started building fortifications and defenses as a strategic military place. In 1860 Tianjin was turned into an open port. For years its industrial production and port trade volume were second only to Shanghai, becoming the second largest commercial city in China and the biggest financial and trading center in northern China.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Tianjin was turned into a municipality directly under the central authorities. There are currently four such cities in China; Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing.
Tianjin’s Antique market (guwan shichang) is one of China’s most impressive markets. Just the sheer size and variety makes it fascinating to stroll around, especially on Sunday mornings. The Ancient Culture street (gu wenhua jie) is an attempt to recreate the appearance of an ancient Chinese city.
On certain public holidays street operas are staged here. It is claimed that the Temple of Tianhou (tian hou gong) was built in 1326. Other great sites include the Confucius Temple (wen miao), Great Mosque (qingzhen si), Dabeiyuan Monastery (dabeiyuan), and the Catholic Church (xikai jiaotong).
There is more to Tianjin than just more people, have a gander.
Colonial Tianjin
Tianjin was one of the most lived in cities in China in terms of Colonial businessmen.
There are even generations of Jewish refugees that were born and died living there whole lives here in a substantial Jewish community.
Therefore Tianjin has some of the best, and definately the most, to offer in terms of restored colonial buildings in China.
If this piece of history is up your alley, go to the Museum of Modern History and have them take you on a tour of some of the more impressive buildings of yore.
